Airfix A06108 De Havilland Vampire is a compact yet highly distinctive plastic model kit in 1/48 scale, allowing builders to choose between the FB.5 or FB.9 variants, two of the most widely used fighter-bomber versions of this early jet aircraft. The Vampire became famous for its unique twin-boom layout and its role as one of the world’s first widely operated jet fighters. The kit features an accurately shaped fuselage, finely engraved panel lines, a detailed cockpit, and realistic landing gear. Once completed, the model measures approximately 21 cm (8.3 inches) in length, with a wingspan of about 23 cm (9 inches) and a height of around 8 cm (3.1 inches), giving it a compact and unmistakable presence in 1/48 scale.
Several attractive paint schemes are possible depending on the version. Classic RAF aircraft can be finished in a natural metal scheme using Vallejo Model Air 71062 Aluminium, with panel variation added using 71056 Metallic Grey and subtle highlights of 71064 Chrome. The cockpit interior is best painted with 71010 Interior Green, while landing gear, wheel hubs, and mechanical details can be highlighted using 70863 Gunmetal Grey. Tires and small parts are painted with 70950 Black. Later FB.9 aircraft may feature camouflage areas combining 71054 Dark Sea Grey and 71012 Dark Green. Subtle exhaust staining and panel shading can be added using Vallejo Model Wash Dark Grey, particularly around the jet exhaust and wing roots.
With its pioneering jet design and distinctive appearance, the De Havilland Vampire plastic model kit is an excellent addition to any early jet or RAF aircraft collection.
